• Dynamic sharding is a distributed processing technology that divides the blockchain network into smaller units for efficient processing.
  • Successfully applied to online game services that require a high number of concurrent users, marking the first case in the industry.
  • Anticipated to be utilized in large-scale transaction projects such as gaming and smart cities.

The public blockchain ‘Locus Chain’ continues to continues to set new records. On the 30th, Bloom Technology(led by CEO Sang-yoon Lee), announced the successful application of ‘dynamic sharding’ to online games.

This technology, embedded in the ‘Locus GameChain,’ is currently implemented in ‘Kingdom Under Fire,’ available on platforms like Steam, with numerous other games planning to adopt the Locus GameChain.

This achievement marks a significant technological milestone, as it is the first instance of replacing online game servers with blockchain (Locus GameChain) and successfully applying ‘dynamic sharding’ technology. CEO Sang-yoon Lee remarked, “This groundbreaking event opens the door to applying public blockchain technology to large-scale real-time transactions in areas such as financial transactions, retail, and smart cities.”

Locus Chain is the world’s first public blockchain that maintains complete decentralization while overcoming the performance and scalability limitations of existing blockchains. ‘Dynamic sharding’ is the core technology that makes this possible. It dynamically adjusts the number and size of shards based on real-time network demand, ensuring security, speed, and scalability. Bloom Technology stated that this is the world’s first sharding technology of its kind.

‘Sharding’ is a data distribution processing technology that divides the blockchain network into smaller units called ‘shards’ for efficient network load management. It is a key technology to overcome the blockchain trilemma, with dynamic sharding being the most challenging to implement. No public blockchain project, including Ethereum, has succeeded in this. Many blockchain mainnet technologies rely on building private networks, compromising decentralization, to manage network load. Maintaining decentralization, a core element of blockchain, while reducing network communication overload has been a significant challenge.

Leading public blockchains like Ethereum and Bitcoin are currently struggling with network overload and slow processing speeds, even with the current transaction volumes, primarily for investment purposes rather than real-world applications.

Bloom Technology explained that dynamic sharding reduces node-to-node communication to standard network processing levels without compromising decentralization. “Since blocks are generated simultaneously in multiple locations across the network, the overall processing capacity increases, and each node only needs to process the minimum blocks related to it, resulting in significantly reduced communication volume,” explained Bloom Technology.

Professor Jong-hyuk Lee of Sejong University, Chair of the Blockchain-Based Technology Committee (TTA PG1006) at the Korea Telecommunications Technology Association, stated, “If dynamic sharding operates stably on a public blockchain, blockchain technology can be fully introduced into various industries requiring large volumes of transactions, such as generative AI, smart cities, and autonomous driving systems.”

CEO Sang-yoon Lee expressed confidence in the Locus Chain’s dynamic sharding technology, the first of its kind in the world. “Unlike fixed sharding structures, this innovative technology can flexibly adjust shards according to network conditions. Successfully applying it to online game services significantly enhances the commercial viability of blockchain technology”.
